"As 2012 comes to a depressingly apocalypse-free conclusion..."?!

"It's gonna be like fucking Doom, man..."

"Apocalypse" is, I think, also sometimes called "Doomsday."

What is the effect of publicizing these sorts of statements? Are the effects predictable? (Cf. Here) What "research program" (if any) has replaced "psychic driving"? Inception? (Cf. Here) Memetics? (Cf. Here)

~ Dom Cobb (Inception)

"Michael Carneal, who killed three and wounded five at a Paducah, Ky., high school in 1997, also was a video game devotee. Michigan State University law Professor Ken Saunders said the 14-year-old had no weapons training yet with eight shots struck three victims in the head and five in the torso. FBI officials say experienced officers hit a target once in five. 'It appears to have been his video game training that made him an effective killer,' Saunders said. Most recently, testimony at the Beltway sniper trial of Lee Malvo showed he trained by playing sniper video games." "That's why the military developed dream sharing
- a training program where soldiers could strangle, stab and shoot each other, then wake up."

"U.S. Army recruiting at the mall with video games[:] The U.S. Army, struggling to ensure it has enough manpower as it fights wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, is wooing young Americans with video games, Google maps and simulated attacks on enemy positions from an Apache helicopter." (Source)  "In recent years the Army has tried a number of ways to increase enlistment, including home video games, direct marketing promotions, a stronger online presence and recruitment-themed music videos. ... "A retired Army lieutenant colonel, [David] Grossman is the author of 'On Killing' and the founder of the Killology Research Group and its Web site, killology.com. He came to the World SWAT Challenge and Conference to address nearly 100 cops -- members of paramilitary police units known as SWAT teams, which is short for Special Weapons And Tactics. Grossman told them we're living in a 'new Dark Age,' an era of al Qaeda-style terrorism combined with Oklahoma City-style bombings and Columbine-style school shootings by kids whose brains are warped by violent video games. Most people are sheep, Grossman said, and you are the warriors who must protect them from the wolves. 'We need warriors who embrace that dirty, nasty four-letter word kill!' he proclaimed." "A team of scientists have said they believe an old gourd contains the blood of French King Louis XVI. The monarch was killed by guillotine by French revolutionaries more than 200 years ago, on 21 January 1793. ... Analysis of DNA taken from blood traces found inside the vegetable container had already revealed that it probably matched someone of Louis' description but scientists could not prove it belonged to the beheaded king as they had no genetic material from any of his relatives. However, the team managed to find a rare genetic signature shared with DNA from a mummified head believed to belong to Louis' 16th Century predecessor, Henri IV, who was killed in 1610." David Lightman: "I was trying to break into Protovision...[I]f it's military, why does it  games like checkers and backgammon?" Jim Sting: "Maybe that's because those are games that teach basic strategy." David Lightman: "Is this a game, or is it real?" Joshua: "What's the difference?" (WarGames)
